Everyone comes to Gateway MotorLodge for a different reason. Some of it is a two-night stop on the way between Auckland and Wellington. Some of it is a week of shifts at the hospital. Some of it is a family with a spare bed in the room.
That is why there are five room types rather than one. A studio with a queen bed is the sensible default. If you need a second bed in the same room, there is one. If you need a separate lounge so the kids can sleep while you do not, the two-bedroom apartments are built for it. And the new one-bedroom apartment gives you a proper bedroom without the footprint of a two-bedroom.

Room 01
Studio Unit
Tastefully decorated and fully equipped, this is the workhorse of the motel — and the room most of our guests book twice.
The studio is the simplest room we have and the one we have refurbished most often. It has a full kitchen rather than a kitchenette, which means proper cooking rather than reheating — there is an oven, a hob, a sink and a full-size fridge.
Air-conditioning keeps it comfortable through a Whanganui summer, and the double glazing means the motorway outside never makes it into the room. Two recliner chairs and a 32″ LED television with SKY finish the evening.

Room 02 · Newest
New 1 Bedroom Apartment
The newest addition to the motel — a separate bedroom, a full kitchen and the same furnishings as the rest of the property.
A separate bedroom changes the character of a stay. It is the room to take when one of you is working late, or when a child needs their own space, or when you simply want a bedroom that is not also the living room.
It is tastefully decorated throughout, with full kitchen facilities, air-conditioning, recliner chairs and a generous shower. The same finishing standard as every other room in the motel — just with more floor between you and the bed.

Studio — Queen & Single Bed
A queen and a single bed in the same room, with a kitchenette. Our best-value room, and the one families book first.
Refurbished, with a kitchenette containing an electric jug, toaster, fridge and microwave, and recliner chairs. Both beds are in the same room, separated by curtain-height privacy that gives you a night’s sleep without splitting the party across two spaces.
For a family of three, or for two travellers who would rather have the extra bed than the extra floor space, this is the value pick.

Studio Apartment — Queen Bed
A refurbished studio with a queen bed, a kitchenette and recliner chairs. Simple, warm and well-priced.
Refurbished, with a kitchenette containing an electric jug, toaster, fridge and microwave. Recliner chairs, air-conditioning and a shower. This is the room to take for a couple on a longer stop who want to cook breakfast but not do the washing up afterwards.

2 Bedroom Apartments
Fully refurbished, with a separate lounge, full kitchen facilities and recliner chairs. A queen in the main bedroom, two singles in the second.
There are two of these, and they are the only rooms in the motel with a genuinely separate lounge. That matters more than it sounds: the TV and the recliners live in the lounge, so whoever is sleeping in the second bedroom gets a real night’s rest.
Fully refurbished, with full kitchen facilities, recliner chairs, air-conditioning and a shower. The main bedroom has a queen bed; the second bedroom has two single beds. Best suited to a family or to a group travelling together who want to be in the same apartment.

The from-rates shown on this site start at $100 for the Queen & Single studio, $120 for a two-bedroom apartment, $130 for a studio, and $140 for the new one-bedroom apartment. Rates move with season, day of the week and availability, so the live page is always the accurate figure.
There are seven studio units, one new one-bedroom apartment and two two-bedroom apartments — ten rooms in total. The two-bedroom apartments are the only ones with a separate lounge. Among the studios, some carry a queen bed and some add a single bed in the same room.
Yes — there is on-site parking for every guest, free of charge, with space for larger vehicles and trailers. You do not need to reserve it and you do not need to ask on arrival.
Yes. Complimentary wireless internet is available throughout the property, and every room has a 32″ LED television with SKY. We are also two minutes from Whanganui Base Hospital and a short drive from the airport, which is why a good share of our guests are here on business.
Quieter than they used to be. Every window in the motel has been replaced with new double glazing, which is a genuine barrier to traffic noise rather than a film over the old glass. Combined with the new carpet throughout, the rooms are as quiet as a motel off a state highway can reasonably be.
Absolutely. The Queen & Single studio sleeps three with two beds in one room, and the two-bedroom apartments sleep up to five with a queen in the main bedroom, two singles in the second and a separate lounge for the television. Full kitchens mean longer stays are practical, not just possible. Talk to us directly about weekly rates.
Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am. If you are arriving very early or leaving very late, ring us on 06 345 8164 or 027 306 5586 and we will do what we can — late check-out in particular is usually possible when the following day is not fully booked.
